I've been promising to do this one for a few years now, and for New Year's Day 2013, I decided to just do it. A ride east on 63rd St. in the Caprice, and a rather depressing one at that, for those who remember what it used to look like. And folks, back in the day, 63rd St. jumped. There were wall-to-wall business, starting with the 63rd & Halsted shopping district at the heart of Englewood, at one time the second largest in profits after the Loop, anchored by Sears, Walgreen's, Wieboldt's (a formerly prominent Chicago department store chain) and S.S. Kresge's, with smaller stores extending for a half-mile in all directions. The Southtown Theater, where a newer Walgreen's and Aldi sit today, had SWANS swimming in a pool in the lobby. Side note: my mom saw "Mutiny on the Bounty" there with her January 1936 Englewood H.S. graduating class. It was declining all through the 60's; an ill-fated move to turn it into a pedestrian and bus mall to try to compete with outlying malls like Ford City and Evergreen Plaza dealt the death blow. Some of the canopies that shaded the entrances to now-demolished stores are still standing. (Having learned nothing from that experience, city planners tried the same thing with State St. in the Loop, with similar results.) That devastated 63rd/Halsted intersection is now dominated by Kennedy-King College, which has moved its campus from 69th and Wentworth. Nice buildings, but you can't buy groceries, sweatsocks or a 40" flatscreen TV on a college campus. The businesses extended all the way to that long railroad viaduct east of the Dan Ryan Expressway; at the end of the viaduct is State St., near the site of a fiery 1950 collision between a CTA Green Hornet streetcar and a gasoline tank truck. Farther east, the 63/Cottage Grove branch of the Green Line curves onto 63rd St., bathing it in dappled shadows for the next 2 miles. It now ends at Cottage Grove; formerly, the tracks extended all the way to Stony Island. Again, from King Drive to Stony Island was wall-to-wall businesses. Most are gone now; they followed their former middle-class customers from Woodlawn to neighborhoods and suburbs farther south. Unless those middle-class residents can be enticed to come back to Woodlawn, Bronzeville and Englewood, I doubt those neighborhoods, or any of Chicago's declining neighborhoods, can be brought back to life.
